Legal services

Practice areas: family, employment, civil and commercial law

I represent and advise clients in four areas. Under each you will find what you can bring to me, how proceedings in Slovakia usually work and answers to common questions.

Connections

How the areas relate to each other

Legal matters rarely fit into a single area. A divorce involves property, a dismissal involves claims arising from the employment, and running a business involves contracts and receivables. That is why I assess matters in context.

Family law governs relations between spouses and between parents and children. When divorced spouses divide a house or flat, civil law and the land registry also come into play, where ownership changes only upon registration.

Employment and commercial law meet inside a company: it employs people, concludes contracts with partners and recovers debts. Civil law is the common foundation for contracts, damages and time limits, unless a special statute provides otherwise.

At your first contact you do not need to know which area your matter belongs to. Describe what happened and I will assess it; if the matter touches several areas, I will propose the order of the steps.

Every matter is different. Before the first step, I will explain the procedure, the time limits and your options, so that you can decide with full information.

Procedure

How we work together

The procedure is the same whatever the area. I explain each step, and you decide on the next one.

  1. First message

Write to me briefly about what happened and what you need to achieve. A description in your own words is enough; you may attach documents, but you do not have to.

  2. Assessment

I study the documents and assess which rules apply to the matter. I explain the options, the time limits and the risks of each course of action.

  3. Agreeing the scope

We agree the scope of the service and the fee in writing beforehand. You will know what my work will include and what remains with you.

  4. Carrying it out

I prepare contracts and filings, represent you before a court or authority and keep you informed of the important steps as they happen.

Common questions

Where do I start if I am not sure which area my matter belongs to?

Write to me briefly about what happened and what you need to achieve. I will assess which area applies and explain which documents I will need.

Which documents should I prepare?

Contracts, deeds, decisions and correspondence relating to the matter. Please do not include birth numbers or bank account numbers in your first message; I will ask for them when they are needed.

Is what I write protected by confidentiality?

An attorney is bound by confidentiality about facts learned in connection with providing legal services (section 23 of Act No. 586/2003 Coll. on the Legal Profession).

How long does it take to resolve a matter?

It depends on the type of matter, on whether the parties reach an agreement and on the workload of the court or authority. An agreement or contract can be prepared in a short time, while court proceedings take longer. I will give you an estimate after studying your documents.

How is the fee set and who pays the costs of proceedings?

We agree the scope of the service and the fee beforehand in writing, in a contract for the provision of legal services. The court decides on the costs of court proceedings; a party that was fully successful is as a rule entitled to have them reimbursed (section 255 of the Civil Dispute Code).

Can we communicate electronically?

Yes. We can handle initial matters by e-mail, and I can also prepare filings in electronic form. I will ask for sensitive data, such as birth numbers, only when I need them.

Write to me about your matter

Describe your matter briefly and attach documents if you have them. I will get back to you, explain how we can proceed and suggest a first step.
